Ruth decided that chasing the kids hither and yon was not enough of a physical challenge for her so Saturday morning she decided to run a 5k race in our neighborhood:  The Brookhaven Bolt.  She’s been running after the kids go to bed for the past couple of months to get ready for the Bolt.

As for me, I did my part for her:  I made her eat pasta the night before the race; I made a playlist for the run on her iPhone; I made iced coffee for the morning to give her a boost and most importantly I wheeled all three kids to the finish line so she could have her own portable cheering section.

Afterwards, Ruth asked Cara if she was proud of her and Cara said “yes!” and gave her a big hug.  Chloe Jane, however,  was quick to point out, “But Cara, she didn’t win.”

Portable Cheering Section!

For those of you interested in making iced coffee, you don’t just pour hot coffee over ice.  Brew the coffee the night before.  Make the coffee stronger than you would normally make it because the ice will water it down some (I usually use a tablespoon per 6 oz for hot coffee, but for iced coffee, I used 1 and a half tablespoons per 6 oz.  Next sweeten the coffee to taste while it is hot (because the sweetner doesn’t dissolve in cold coffee).  Then put the coffee in the fridge overnight.  The next day pour the coffee over ice and add milk and, if you like, vanilla syrup.  Delicious.
