. . . the Kingdom was nearly lost. On Wednesday, May 16, Ruth and Chloe Jane came back from an afternoon at the Botanical Gardens to be greeted by a waterfall coming through the ceiling. Water was coming through the ceiling at the entrance door from the garage and the ceiling in the TV room. She called a plumber who quickly determined that the culprit was a water filtration system failure. There was a water filter system under the sink that was there when we bought the house, but we never really used. Apparently, it was not installed well and finally gave out at a time when no one was home to minimize the impact.

The plumber called in a water extraction team which spent hours removing items from the basement, tearing out all the carpet, tearing out the damaged ceiling and all the baseboards in the kitchen. The water didn’t go through the tile in the kitchen, but went through the baseboards to get downstairs.

We will have large (and loud) fans going for days before repairs begin. Our insurance company wants to dry out the carpet and re-install, but we find that unacceptable. We’re not putting the formerly saturated carpet back into our house. We may look at replacing the carpet with something like tile. I had been keeping my camera equipment down there, but fortunately, I brought it up a couple of days before so it would be handy in case Chloe Jane did something cute. Unfortunately, several old family photos that Ruth had were damaged.
